About Scarlet Black

Scarlet Black is an artist photographer.  When she began her work in photography, the name Scarlet Black Was chosen as an artistic persona.  The rationale was that the name Scarlet Black Embodies the superhero qualities of strength, decisiveness, and irreverence - the name is also heavy on the fun factor. 

After obtaining an MFA degree from UBC, Scarlet Black Went on to design sets and costumes for local Vancouver theatres.  She then transitioned into fashion design and pattern making. Fashion design combined with an interest in photography offered a way to renew and expand her artistic goals.  She spent several years photographing fashion designs at Vancouver Fashion Week.  

Photography grew to become one of Scarlet Black’s core expressive mediums.  Over the last 20 years, she has been known primarily as a flower photographer.  However, she has produced considerable work in other areas of photography including photo impressionism, minimalism as well as plant and garden photography.   

Scarlet Black has had a solo show of her artwork at the Surrey Art Gallery.  She has a photographic series “Paradise Now,” in the City of Surrey Public Art Collection.  She has also shown work at The Newton Cultural Centre and the VisualSpace Gallery in Vancouver.  Her work has also been showcased at local photographic clubs.  

A show of her portrait drawings and watercolour paintings was exhibited in a 4 artist show at the Landmark Pop-up Gallery.  Her performance art often involves acapella singing that highlights social issues. 

Upcoming:

Scarlet Black is currently developing new material that will be displayed in a Tiny Gallery (the “Meet Gallery”) as well as on her website.  Having your own tiny gallery means the lack of a gatekeeper, more freedom and less expense.  Expect both highbrow, personal and irreverent offerings to come.
